Agency Information on Reemployment

Each of the plans administered by PERS has provisions for the reemployment of retirees receiving a benefit under such plan. In addition, some plans have regulations which offer further guidance on the reemployment of such individuals. Detailed information for each plan is available as referenced below.

Municipal Retirement Systems (MRS)

The Municipal Retirement Systems are now closed. Generally speaking, there are two types of Municipal Retirement Systems, those for general administrative employees and those for firemen and policemen. If a member retires from one of the Firemen and Policemen's Disability and Relief Funds, he or she may later be employed by another municipality, but not the same municipality, as a fireman or policeman covered by PERS and continue to draw benefits from the Disability and Relief Fund from which he or she retired. If a Disability and Relief Fund retiree is reemployed as a fireman or policeman with the same municipality, his or her Disability and Relief Fund retirement benefit will be suspended during such reemployment, but he or she will continue to accrue additional retirement benefits under PERS.

Likewise, a retired general municipal member may be reemployed by another covered municipality or employer and continue to draw his or her municipal retirement benefits. However, if such municipal retiree is reemployed by the same municipality from which he or she retired, the municipal retirement benefit will be suspended during such reemployment and he or she will continue to accrue retirement benefits under PERS.
